Gallery West Presents

"Big World, Small Paintings"

Oil Paintings by Cindi Lewis

Wednesday, September 8 - Sunday, October 3, 2010

Second Thursday Old Town Alexandria Art Night, Thursday, September 9, 2010, 6-9pm

Artist’s Reception: Saturday, September 18, 2010, 5-8pm
Featuring Live Jazz performed by Mike and Dave Gassmann

Regular Gallery Hours: Wednesday - Sunday 11am-6pm

Painting offers many pleasures: the fresh beginning presented by every blank canvas and palette of freshly squeezed paint; the moment when an image starts to emerge and take on a life of its own; the opportunity to lose oneself in a process that is both stimulating and calming; the pride when a painting turns out well – and even the “teachable moments” when pieces go horribly wrong. But I have also discovered, like countless others before me, that the artist’s habit of looking closely at the world has additional rewards as I notice the interplay of colors, light, and shapes wherever I go. Even doing something as mundane as driving on the Beltway has been transformed; the boredom (or worse) has been replaced by cheerful contemplation of the variety of greens in the trees bordering the highway or the effect of the late afternoon light – and of how to capture them in paint.

This show shares a personal, maybe idiosyncratic, collection of such moments, in locations ranging from my backyard in Alexandria to travel destinations overseas. Emphasizing the color and light initially attracting me to each of these scenes, I invite the viewer to share my small glimpses of the world.
